Saturday, April 30, 2016, six members of Mt Lassen Fiber Guild (Chico) participated in Chico’s Blue Oak School’s May Faire.
Blustery winds required cement blocks and gallon water jugs to be tied to the canopy legs to prevent take off, while several woven pieces waving gaily in the wind attracted young attendees, aged kindergarten to eighth grades.
Our focus was on fiber fun for the kids, which included hands-on activities and take-a-way kits. Gale Ulvang warped her rigid heddle loom with colorful wool. Lori Mason warped a hula hoop with strips of torn sheets and Cyndi Dickinson brought her four-harness table loom ready for the children to weave a colorful banner. Caroline Warren very generously shared her wool roving to give kids the chance to pedal on her spinning wheel. Felicia Heidrick knitted yards of tube socks on her sock knitting machine—kids were seen turning the handle and later wearing pieces as headbands and bracelets. Cyndi Dickinson, Lori Mason and Linda Hilgeman taught children to weave with drinking straws and braid with Kumihimo disks. Over a hundred take-a-way kits were given to interested children. Baskets of alpaca fleece were available to create hanging fleece balls for birds to use in nest building.
While the event was targeted to children, their parents and family members also showed an interest in fiber, with several new member applications filled out to Mt Lassen Fiber Guild.
Over all, it was a very successful day for children (and their parents) to play with fiber as well as for Mt Lassen Fiber Guild to fulfill our mission statement:
The purpose of Mt Lassen Fiber Guild
shall be to promote fiber art of high standard,
provide educational opportunities,
create friendly cooperation among members,
and to stimulate public interest in fiber art.
