Area Attractions

The Monterey Bay area offers so much to do during your down-time, before or after the conference, or for your companion while you’re busy at your workshop. And April usually brings the very best weather: Less fog, warmer days, relatively calmer bay waters. A walk along Asilomar Beach is perfect for appreciating the local beauty (try sunset! OMG!) At low tide, the tide pools right along those rocks are a wonder to explore.

There are also more than 25 public golf courses in the larger Monterey Bay area, and one of the best is super close:
Pacific Grove Municipal, known by locals as “the poor man’s Pebble Beach,” because the dunes-style back nine runs along the shore.

Also right in that area is the beautiful old Point Pinos Lighthouse; newly renovated with loving local donations, sometimes open for tours.

Very close: the world-famous Monterey Bay Aquarium. Oh, the colors.

Also nearby, the Monarch Sanctuary, where you might catch some late-to-leave butterflies

And within a mile from Asilomar: The Monarch Sanctuary, where you might still catch some stray butterflies late to leave.

It’s also the tail end of the whale migration, and whale watching is popular from year-round boat tours out of Fisherman’s Wharf.

Elkhorn Slough is a great place for kayaking among the egrets & otters.

If shopping and art galleries are your thing, head to downtown Carmel.

And don’t forget to take a day trip to Big Sur if you can, to feed your inner hippie. You know you want to. Highway One is open all the way.

There’s so much more! A good website which covers many local attractions is called See Monterey.
