Dyeing for Weavers
Jess Kaufman

dyed warp on loom

Join Jess, a professional textile artist who specializes in fiber reactive dyes, for two and a half days of color! This workshop is a round-up of many techniques for your dyeing pleasure!

You’ll do a deep dive into ice dyeing, Shibori, low water immersion, and direct application (hand painting) with dyes designed for cellulose fibers. Warps of cotton, tencel, rayon, linen, hemp, bamboo, and other plant fibers will take the dye beautifully, and protein fibers (wool, silk) will still take color but not as accurately.

Bring as many prepared warps as you like— you’ll have the time and space to maximize your output! Skeins of yarn are welcome. You can also dye your prepared cloth, be it handwoven or commercial. Have projects you no longer love the color of? Refresh them in a dye bath! Have old aprons, t-shirts, tea towels, or napkins that need a facelift? Learn up to a dozen patterns and methods for these versatile dyes. Class will focus on techniques rather than specific projects, so the sky is the limit and individuality is welcome (yeah!!).

SKILL LEVEL: All levels welcome.

EQUIPMENT:  Please bring any/all of the things you’d like to dye. Bring your own labeled small buckets (1-2 gallon) and flat plastic containers (ideas in this list), but I will have some on hand in case we need extras. It’s better to bring more (things to dye, things to dye in) than fewer!

PRE-WORKSHOP PREP: none.

MATERIALS FEE:  $60
