Learn to make unique fringe and how to use a resist for 3D designs. The characteristics of wool and why it felts will be discussed as well as tools and materials. I will supply my hand dyed Merino wool for the project, bits of yarn, rolling tools and detailed written instructions.

Passementerie – Tassels (3-205)
Robyn Spady
Saturday afternoon 3-hr class
Tassels, one form of passementerie, originated as a weaving knot. Over time, tassels evolved into decorative fiber accents for interiors and garments. They’ve been found everywhere from the tombs of Egyptian pharaohs to the modern day cellular phone. There are a wide variety of techniques used to create these fiber accents. In this hands-on seminar participants will presented with several simple methods for creating tassels from yarn and other materials.
Skill Level: Beginner
Materials Fee: $5
Students should bring: Notebook and pen.
Nuno Felting (6-302)
class is FULL
Carin Engen
Sunday all day 6-hr class
The class will explore making a light weight felted fabric using a hand dyed silk scarf for the backing, merino/ tussah, bombyx silk and bits of fuzzy yarn for the “icing”. Felt these fibers into the silk fabric base and shrink them to make beautiful texture. Don’t cover the entire surface and see what happens. The pucker made when the wool shrinks makes a secondary and magical design. You will wear your scarf out of the classroom, maybe a bit damp, but finished. After you learn the technique try making yardage, a light weight jacket, shawl, curtain, who knows. One of my students made a shower curtain! Try using other fabrics with an open weave. The creativity is endless. Beginners welcome.
Skill Level: All levels
Materials Fee: $26.50
Students should bring: 2 old towels, boucle or mohair yarn scraps if you wish, small bucket or dish pan, pair of scissors. Instructor will bring rolling tool kits available for purchase after the class for $20.00
eTextiles for Knitters and Weavers (6-308)
class is FULL
Syne Mitchell
Sunday all day 6-hr class
Want to create textiles that light up the night? Come learn how to incorporate LEDs and other electronics into your fiber projects. In this class students will be given an overview of eTextiles: how to add lights, temperature sensors, motion sensors, buzzers, and more to their garments. We will look at and discuss the Lilypad Arduino circuit board, and then students will apply these principals to create their own eTextile garment, either a knitted hat or a woven scarf.
Skill Level: Beginning (students need to know how to either weave plain weave or knit in the round and bring such a project in progress)
Materials Fee: $25
Students should bring: A project in progress, either a knit in the round piece, or a plain weave project.
Sprang: The Elastic Fabric (3-303)
class is FULL
Stephenie Gaustad
Sunday morning 3-hr class
There is an ancient textile structure that consists of a single yarn, laid onto a frame and worked by hand. Manipulation is simple and the task moves quickly as a single pass adds a row to both the top and bottom as the fabric is worked to the center. The fabric is supple, elastic. It can be like a dense woven or open, airy like lace. It is sprang.
This presentation is a hands on introduction. Join us and experience a fabric that goes “sproing”! Materials fee includes handouts and yarn; instructor will provide sprang frames for use during the class.
Skill Level: Beginning (some experience in either knitting, crochet, weaving, or spinning
Materials Fee: $5
Students should bring: Nothing required.
A Sewer’s Perspective: Instructional Tour of the Juried Fashion Show (3-306)
Daryl Lancaster
Sunday morning 3-hr class
An interactive exploration behind the “seams” of the garments from the Fashion Show. Experience a technical critique of the inside finishing techniques as well as the outside appearance, and fit. This kind of experience provides the participants with many ideas for finishing, what works and what doesn’t, allowing participants to view first hand, some of the choices used by experienced fiber artists. This seminar presents a rare opportunity to see inside the fashion show garments on exhibition. Participants experience the ultimate “show and tell.” The goal is to have participants look at the finishing techniques on their own work and assess the appropriateness, level of innovation and creativity. Sometimes the simplest of garments and finishing details can be the most effective. Sometimes the details make the piece.
Skill Level: All levels
Materials Fee: None
Students should bring: Notebook and pen.
Closures (3-402)

Dyeing Machine Knitted Silk for Weaving (3-403)
Nancy Roberts
Sunday afternoon 3-hr class
Students will learn to dye pre-knitted silk to use as warp or weft yarn. By dyeing knit fabric “blanks” rather than 2- and 3-yard skeins, weavers can produce color repeats of any length. It is surprising how easy it is to create one continuous strand of yarn with subtle or bold color transitions.
